Disney in German

Hallo!

Ich heiße Ashley!!

I decided to watch the German translations of music videos for songs (most of them from Disney movies) of which I knew the English versions. It was interesting to hear how the German versions followed the melody of the songs, but the English translations of the German lyrics were different from the English lyrics I’m used to. One in particular which stood out to me was “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.

The German version of the song is “In meine Welt” (or when Jasmine sings “In deine Welt”), which means “In My World” (“In Your World”).

I also listened to “You’ve Got A Friend” from Toy Story. I immediately recognized “Du hast ein freund in mir,” not because it’s the name of the song, but from the vocab and speaking that we have done in class and have learned thus far.

I also watched a clip from Lion King. Most of the German I didn’t really understand, but there was one spot where Simba fragte Timon und Pumbaa “Was ist das?” As simple a phrase as it was, I was excited that I understood it.

I really enjoyed the listening I did for this Adventure in Deutsch.

Tschuss!!

AMD 1 Kyle O'Meara

For my AMD assignment I decided to change the language on my Facebook to German. This came off as a surprise, but I also found familiar words that I have learned to far in German 101. It was interesting that all of the times on the page changed to times that Americans often refer to as military time. I also learned that "likes this" function changes to gefällt das. I also noticed Mobile Uploads was replaced by Handy Uploads, which I found interesting because it was still easily understood to me as a beginning German student. I immediately recognized all the unds on the site as and and friending someone changed to befreundet. I felt like this was a great learning experiance because I am use to checking my Facebook all the time and am familar where things go and to see German replacements for what I know is the the English word really helped expand my German vocabulary.

AMD 1 - South Park episode

For this chapter's AMD I chose to watch an episode of South Park in German. The episode of South Park that I chose to watch was the first "imaginationland" episode. While I was not able to understand most of the words that were being said by the characters, there were a few I was able to understand. I chose to watch this episode because I have watched it in English before, so I knew what the episode was about. It was very entertaining to watch an episode in German because of the completely different voices that the characters have. I really enjoyed this assignment.

Maedchen in Uniform Review- Terrence Tigney

I've just finished watching "Maedchen in Uniform" and overall, it was a decent movie. The description of it made it seem like it was your typical 'student and teacher fall in love and have an illicit affair' kind of movie; however this was not the case. It seemed to be more about a young girl's toils, as she deals with losing her mother and being thrown into an all girls school, where they are trained to be good, obedient wives. Due to her loss and the rather strict way the girls are treated, the main character (played by Romy Schneider) latches on to the only kind adult there: her teacher (played by Lilli Palmer). Although, her teacher does not share them same intimate feelings for her. Overall, I would give the movie 3.5 stars.

Some new words I've learned are:
Ouberlegen- superior
Absonderung- isolation
lieben-to love

Willkommen!!

Welcome to our class blog!

We will be using this blog throughout the semester for two kinds of assignments:

1. Once per chapter, the homework plan will direct you to post a response to the culture readings for the chapter on the blog.

2. Roughly every other week, the homework plan will direct you to post here for your Abenteuer mit Deutsch (AMD) assignment. First you do
a fun activity that involves German, then you post about it. You should spend an hour total on this (maybe 45-55 minutes doing something, 5-15 minutes posting about it). See Was ist ein AMD, AMD Ideen
and Beispiele for ideas. This should get you excited about the kinds of things you can do!

Whenever you post something, please include your name and the name of the assignment (e.g. AMD2, Kultur5) as labels. See "Blog: How To" for more details!
