Kultur 3- Jake DeBolt

Tonight, we have an interesting exploration of German humor and eating habits. The most interesting article of the bunch, I found, was "Capping the Bottle." It was about the debate amongst public officials concerning tighter laws on public drunkenness. It's definitely an interesting read, especially when one considers the German stereotype of Biersteins and Lederhosen. The arguments on both sides were compelling; however, I find myself siding with stricter laws. Public drunkenness is a problem, however, there was an Interesting method that I read. Apparently, in Kiel, there is an establishment called "The Sofa." It's a BYOB lounge where people can go and enjoy a glass of beer or wine. I wonder if such an establishment would work as well in the United States?

Another interesting article was the one considering German honesty. I find this to be very much like the previous articles concerning the matter: incredibly generalizing. IT makes the assumption that all Germans are straightforward to the point of rudeness. I did appreciate the line "Anyone with intelligence cannot be as happy as you," though. It sounds like something I would say. Perhaps that is just the Deutscher within me trying to claw it's way out! I guess there could be a cultural undercurrent of honesty, I wouldn't feel it is as brutal as the article depicts.

Danke, und Gute Nacht!
Jake
