AMD 6 -Ashley Britt
For the last AMD, I watched the Simpsons videos. Actually, I was only able to watch Bart's Tag as the other links were unavailable. I am definitely finding it much easier to catch words and phrases in Deutsche now. With videos such as this, I can listen for the words and phrases I know and then use the video to help fill in where I don't understand. Words and phrases I understood included Frühstück, Frühling, tot and Ich liebe Bier. Poor Bart had a rough day, but I would argue that the Robots was equally as bad. Overall, I enjoyed this AMD.

AMD 6 - Terrence Tigney
Guten Abend,
Heute, habe ich "Sonnen Allee" gesehen. Es war gut.
The movie was somewhat unique in the fact that it was a comedy about a time, and a place, you wouldn't expect. The movie takes place while the Berlin wall is still up, and it follows the lives of several kids (and their families) during this time. The people that the story follows all live near one of the few places people could cross over from east Berlin to west Berlin, so naturally, there was plenty going on. In addition to that, these people actually lived on the east side of the wall, giving us a general idea (that may not be 100% accurate, as this is a comedy) about what life was like living in the east side of Berlin during the time that the city was split. Overall, I would give this movie about 4/5 stars (mostly because I found it really funny)

AMD 6- Kyle O'Meara
For my AMD I decided to go back and take a look at Mark Twain's "That Awful German Language". I believe this was a suggestion for an earlier AMD, but at the time I chose not to do it. After reading a majority of the essay I found Mark Twain had questions about how a noun was masculine,neuter, or feminine. He specifically used the word "Regen" or rain. This was pretty funny to me considering is one of the best literary artists of American history, yet he is struggling to comprehend things that I am right now, an 18 year old college student. I also found his analysis on very long German words to be interesting. Even though we did not learn many long words yet in the vocabulary I took some Twain wrote down and found their definitions online. Some of my favorites are.
Unabhaengigkeitserklaerungen. (Declaration of Independence) and Waffenstillstandsunterhandlungen. (Cease-fire Negotiations).
I think it is pretty cool how Germans have one word for some English "phrases". I really enjoyed this essay and Twain's writing on the process of the German language and how it was formed was intriguing.

The Simpsons
For my activity, I chose to do the recommended activity and watch the Simpson's Tag videos
I was surprised at how much I could actually understand and this made me more excited to learn more German so that one day I will be able to completely understand everything being said in each video.
I found the videos very entertaining and fun to watch because they were so animated and it was easy to follow along with. My favorite part was when Homer went to the doctor after cutting off his thumb accidentally and the doctor said they couldn't help because technically your thumb is not a finger.
I though that the idea to show one day from the viewpoint of each character was very clever and it showed what a crazy family the Simpson's are. I felt really bad for Lisa when she accidentally showed up late for class only to realize she went to the wrong school. I can sympathize with this because when I first started college there were at least 2 instances where I accidentally ended up in the wrong building or room when class began and I was so embarrassed when I realized this and had to leave class with people awkwardly staring at me.

AMD 6
I watched the Simpson's episode for AMD 6. I recognized "Fruhstuck!" right away. It's interesting that they still call it "cornflakes,' even though that is a compound of two English words. It sounded like Lisa called Homer "Dad." ? "Tout mir leid" says Homer after he breaks the "robot." I'm surprised I can understand things without subtitles. That severed thumb is pretty gross...I don't really get why the doctor won't reattach it? And then there is the head of Lisa'a robot?
Oh, so Lisa must have made that robot for a science competition. I didn't get that last time, I thought it was just a toy. Oh, the Lola Rennt music! I paused it on the monkey's subtitles. Haha "the frog eats the grapefruit." It does sound like the teacher has a French accent to his German, how interesting. This really isn't the same concept as Lola Rennt at all, but it is still a good mystery.
Ok the Bart one didn't work and I can't find it on youtube or google video search. I ended up finding it on some Russian (I think?) website. The characters looked like Russian to me but I couldn't be sure. Surprisingly, the video was in English. Well it was the best I could do, so at least I know how the story ends. Here are some words used in this section and what they would have been in German:
lazy = faul
to cry = zu weinen
fireworks = Feuerwerk
gun = Pistole
Yeah that really wasn't very similar to Lola Rennt, except for when Lisa ran with the same background music. It was still entertaining and I was able to pick out a lot of German words!
